Michael has over twenty years of experience in large law firm, corporate, and venture capital environments in the area of intellectual property and business operations counseling. He is also a Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania. Michael’s practice focuses on patent preparation and prosecution, opinion and transactional work, and business litigation and operations counseling.
Michael was a partner at Grande Ventures, LLC, a private venture capital fund that invested in a various hardware and software technologies including automation and controls, parallel and virtual computing software, radar, combustion technology, mobile phone technology, and optical communications. He served as a board member for several of the portfolio companies and as CEO for the automation and controls company during a management transition.
As Chief Intellectual Property Counsel with Corvis Corporation, a venture-funded telecom equipment start-up that went public and was later acquired by Level 3 Communications (LVLT), Michael managed all aspects of intellectual property for the company including patent preparation & prosecution, patent litigation, licensing, transactions, opinions and was part of the executive team. During his time at Corvis, he was also promoted to Senior Vice President of Research & Development and Manufacturing, in addition to his role as Chief Intellectual Property Counsel.
Michael was a patent attorney with the law firm of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart (now K&L Gates), where his practice focused on patent and trademark preparation and prosecution, opinions, and transactions, and litigation support, working in areas such as software, metallurgy, material science, semiconductor manufacturing, optics, optical communications, medical devices, and mechanical systems.
Michael was a senior engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corporation, where he developed mathematical models and software to perform power system thermal hydraulic and material performance analysis and predictive modeling. He and his colleagues received the Westinghouse Signature of Excellence award for this work, which resulted in the savings of millions of dollars each year in operational downtime.
Keri has over 20 years of experience in the field of intellectual property. For as long as she can remember, she has been passionate about patent law and the protection of intellectual property for as long as she can remember. Keri was introduced to the field of IP at a young age by her father, who is also a patent attorney and fellow Electrical Engineer. She developed a fascination with inventions and protecting those inventions at a young age. Keri is experienced in a wide variety of technologies, from the simple to the highly complex, and always eager to learn new technologies and advances in existing technologies.
She has experience protecting many technologies, such as electrical circuits and systems, mechanical devices and systems, RF and digital signal processing, semiconductors, optics, photonics, electronic systems, complex imaging systems, aerodynamic structures for vehicles and tractor-trailer trucks, electronic card readers, RF and digital signal processing, handheld personal devices, image and feature recognition, image processing,
networking, network infrastructures, router configurations, medical devices, construction equipment, software, gate-level simulation of electronic circuits, signal systems, RF circuitry, medical imaging, machine vision technology, graphical user interface applications, computer applications, and many other areas.
Keri has served as the Vice Chair of the Intellectual Property Law section of the New Hampshire Bar Association since 2016. She has also spent time as a volunteer New Hampshire CASA Guardian Ad Litem.
James is the founder and owner of Onyx IP Group. James has over 13 years of experience in the intellectual property (IP) field. He has private practice experience in advising clients as well as preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the electrical, software, and mechanical technology areas. Additionally, James has in-house experience at a Fortune 100 company as a corporate counsel managing a large portfolio of patents as well as training and advising engineers (including chief engineers and business unit leaders) on various issues related to IP. Furthermore, he has in-house experience at a large institution of higher education as an associate general counsel focusing on transactional matters (e.g., drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements related to IP matters).
